Bravely and honestly, the Head of Operation at Nickolds Property Management tells her story (and victory) against drug and alcohol addiction. 

Alcohol and drugs are a devastating plague in the UK, with 290,635 adults in contact with drug and alcohol services between April 2022 and March 2023, according to the Office For National Statistics. A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the severe impact of substance abuse, with 2.6 million deaths per year attributed to alcohol consumption, making up 4.7% of all deaths worldwide, and 0.6 million deaths to psychoactive drug use.

Despite these alarming statistics, thankfully, people manage to turn their lives around. Helen Gammons is one of those people. In 2009, after a long struggle with alcohol and cocaine addiction, Helen became sober. She began working with individuals trying to overcome their own addictions locally and has been taking personal and professional strides forward ever since. 

Helen spent time in the charity sector, assisting many tenants now housed by Nickolds Property Management. She openly shared her story, offering guidance and advice to others facing similar battles. 

Eventually, Helen transitioned from working in drug and alcohol recovery to tackling homelessness. This is where she met Keely, the founder of Nickolds Property Management. After working together for a few years, Helen asked Keely for a job because she admired the work they were doing. 

Helen's message is one of hope: "Everyone's got the opportunity to change. You can always access support, but ultimately, you've got to want that change. There is a turnaround point, a comeback. There is an opportunity to make a success of your life. It doesn’t have to end in the bottle or with a wrap of cocaine."

Helen's journey is inspiring and highlights both the dangers of drugs and alcohol and the possibility of recovery and success. Helen has now been promoted to head of operations, demonstrating that with determination and support, a new beginning is possible.
